Cell Diversity

The Microscope            June 1st, 2017
Objectives: Explain why cells are fundamental to biology

Compare the following terms:
    • Light microscope vs electron microscopes
      • Light microscope: Magnifies using beam of light
      • Electron microscope: Magnifies using beam of electrons

    • Scanning electron microscopes vs transmission electron microscopes
      • SEM: Fine static beams that scan line by line
      • TEM: Broad static beams
    • Magnification versus resolution
      • Magnification: making small objects seem larger
      • Resolution: ability to distinguish two things from each other
    • Prokaryotic cells vs eukaryotic cells
      • Prokaryotic cells: Small, Simple, DNA in nucleoid, No organelles
      • Eukaryotic cells: Large, Complex, DNA in nucleus, Many organelles
    • Plant cells vs animal cells
      • Plant cells: Larger size range, has chloroplasts/ cell wall/ vacuole, square
      • Animal cells: Smaller size range, has cilia, round

Microscope Anatomy
Objectives: 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x
Magnification: 40x, 100x, 400x, 1000x
