The Microscope June 1st, 2017
Objectives: Explain why cells are fundamental to biology
Compare the following terms:
- Light microscope vs electron microscopes
- Light microscope: Magnifies using beam of light
- Electron microscope: Magnifies using beam of electrons
- Scanning electron microscopes vs transmission electron microscopes
- SEM: Fine static beams that scan line by line
- TEM: Broad static beams
- Magnification versus resolution
- Magnification: making small objects seem larger
- Resolution: ability to distinguish two things from each other
- Prokaryotic cells vs eukaryotic cells
- Prokaryotic cells: Small, Simple, DNA in nucleoid, No organelles
- Eukaryotic cells: Large, Complex, DNA in nucleus, Many organelles
- Plant cells vs animal cells
- Plant cells: Larger size range, has chloroplasts/ cell wall/ vacuole, square
- Animal cells: Smaller size range, has cilia, round
Microscope Anatomy
Objectives: 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x
Magnification: 40x, 100x, 400x, 1000x
